Arbor Chase Has Two Roundabouts Coming. Only One Is Actually Under Construction.

If you've scrolled Nextdoor in Arbor Chase over the past few weeks, you've probably seen a post or two about a roundabout going in near Kalberer Road. Neighbors have been comparing notes, guessing at timelines, and generally treating it as one project with one finish line.

It isn't. There are two separate roundabout projects tied to this corner of West Lafayette, on two different roads, running on two very different clocks. One has crews and barricades out right now. The other is still years from breaking ground. Knowing which is which will save you a wrong turn this fall, especially with Halloween plans on the calendar.

The Closure That's Actually Happening Right Now

From August 31 through November 30, 2026, through traffic is blocked on Salisbury Street, also known as County Road 50 West, between Burnley Drive and the 4300 block near County Road 425. Crews are building a roundabout where Salisbury meets a brand new road: County Road 425 North.

That new road is the real project here. It's a three-lane collector road being built to connect Yeager Road and Soldiers Home Road, running through the stretch between Kalberer Road and County Road 500 North. Along with the new pavement comes storm sewer work, curbs, sidewalks, and a trail, plus a second roundabout planned where the new road meets Soldiers Home Road.

If you live along the closed stretch of Salisbury or run a business there, access hasn't been cut off. It's through traffic, the kind of driver using Salisbury as a shortcut north, that has to find another way for the next couple of months. The city has a closure map posted online if you want the exact boundaries before you plan a route.

This is the project actually disrupting drives this fall. It is not the one most people mean when they talk about "the Kalberer roundabout."

The Roundabout Everyone Actually Remembers Hearing About

The project most neighbors have in their heads, the one that's been floating around public meetings since 2023, is a different roundabout entirely: one planned for Kalberer Road itself, where it crosses Soldiers Home Road.

That roundabout is part of the long-running Soldiers Home Road Reconstruction project, which covers the corridor from Sagamore Parkway north to Kalberer Road. Public input sessions on this one go back to April 2023 and January 2024, with an environmental public hearing for Phase 1 held in August 2025. As of a city project update in March 2026, engineers had confirmed the design would include a roundabout at Kalberer Road, along with a raised, traffic-calming intersection at Cumberland Avenue and a multi-use trail relocated entirely to the west side of the road.

Design confirmed doesn't mean shovels in the ground. Early city planning documents put Phase 1 construction, the stretch from Sagamore Parkway to Hamilton Street, starting around 2028, with Phase 2 reaching Hamilton Street to Kalberer Road roughly a year after that. Dates on projects like this shift as funding and environmental approvals move, but nothing in the research points to this one starting anywhere close to this fall.

Here's the side-by-side, because the two projects genuinely do overlap in name and geography enough to blur together:

Salisbury Street / CR 425 North Roundabout Kalberer Road / Soldiers Home Road Roundabout
Status Under construction now Design confirmed, construction years out
Closure window Aug 31 to Nov 30, 2026 None yet
What's affected Salisbury St (CR 50 W) between Burnley Dr and the 4300 block Kalberer Rd at Soldiers Home Rd, no closure scheduled
Bigger project it's part of New CR 425 North collector road connecting Yeager Rd and Soldiers Home Rd Soldiers Home Road Reconstruction, Sagamore Pkwy to Kalberer Rd

Two roundabouts, same general square mile, three years apart. That's exactly the kind of overlap that makes local infrastructure news genuinely confusing to keep straight, and it's why the Nextdoor chatter has been treating this as one story instead of two.

Why This Lands Right on Fall Festival Season

The reason this matters beyond commute planning: the John R. Dennis Wellness Center sits at 1101 Kalberer Road, and it hosts West Lafayette Parks and Recreation's Fall Festival there every year, a free evening of trick-or-treating along the trails, games, and treats, with food trucks the only paid item. The city asks families to register through their CivicRec account ahead of time so there's enough candy to go around. Last year's event landed on a Friday in late October, so it's worth checking the parks department's CivicRec listing for this year's exact date before you make plans.

The good news is that the festival address sits on Kalberer Road itself, not on the closed stretch of Salisbury. If your normal route to the wellness center already runs along Kalberer, nothing about the current closure changes your drive. Where it matters is for anyone coming from the north side of West Lafayette or in the habit of cutting through on Salisbury to reach that part of town. That route is off the table until December, so budget a few extra minutes or check the city's posted closure map before you head out for trick-or-treating.

It's worth remembering this stretch of West Lafayette has been under some form of construction for a while now, and probably will be again once the Kalberer roundabout eventually breaks ground. Purdue's incoming freshman class has been setting records in recent years, with fall 2025 landing as the sixth largest in university history, and city officials have said this fall's class is expected to be larger still. New collector roads like County Road 425 North are part of how the city is trying to keep pace with that growth. It's a reasonable bet that this won't be the last road project to touch this corner of town.

What to Actually Do This Fall

A few practical takeaways if you're planning around this over the next two and a half months:

  • The only active closure right now is on Salisbury Street between Burnley Drive and the 4300 block, running through November 30. If you don't drive that stretch regularly, this changes nothing for you.
  • Residents and businesses directly on the closed segment keep their access. It's through traffic that's rerouted.
  • The Kalberer Road roundabout you've heard about for years is still just a confirmed design, not an active project. No closure date has been set, and city planning materials point to construction starting no earlier than 2028.
  • The Fall Festival at 1101 Kalberer Road is unaffected by the current closure unless your usual route runs through the closed part of Salisbury. Confirm this year's exact date through the city's CivicRec listing.
  • Check the city's official closure map before Halloween weekend if you're coming from the north side of town.

Two separate projects, two separate timelines, one address on Kalberer Road that ties them both together in conversation even though only one of them is actually keeping anyone up at night with orange barrels.

If you've got questions about how ongoing road work in this part of West Lafayette might affect a home you're watching, or you're just trying to figure out what a stretch of construction like this means for a neighborhood you already call home, The O'Shea Team knows this corridor well enough to walk through it street by street. Reach out any time, we're happy to talk it through.
